The Willow plant can be grown in the garden throughout the whole year. It doesn't fear cold weather and it bears very harsh minimum temperatures. During the winter months we can cover a portion of the soil near the roots with dry leaves or other mulch tissue; in this manner we will protect the plant from the harsh climate. For a balanced development, it is best to position the The Willow in a place where it is exposed to at least a few hours of direct sunlight.
The Willow develops like a shrub. Willow isn't an evergreen; during the spring it assumes a greenred colouring; the adult species are small in size and reach 80 cm in height. Growing they develop a round-shape shrub.
Letís remember to fertilize our shrubs often; we can fertilize enriching our soil with manure, at the end of the winter; or we can give it a fertilizer for flowering plants, every 20-25 days, when watering. If the shrubs are large or cover a large area, we can use a slow release granular fertilizer, to be used every 3-4 months. In the spring letís favour fertilizers rich in nitrogen and potassium, to favour the development of a new vegetation and of flowerings.
We suggest watering pretty often and regularly, with 1-2 buckets of water ; we should always wait for the soil to be clearly dry between one watering and the other. During this time of year usually it is necessary to irrigate every 2-3 weeks . Concerning those specimens grown in vases, let's remember that usually they need more watering, compared to the same shrubs placed in the ground. Moreover, they are often more sensible to temperatures, either very high or very low, and to radical apparatus diseases.
The spring weather, with a high temperature swing between the day and night hours, and pretty frequent rains, can favour the development of fungus diseases, which should be treated pre-emptively with a systemic fungicide, to use before the gems grow excessively; at the end of the winter we also suggest a wide range insecticide to prevent the attack of aphids and cochineals. We should always remember to do these treatments when there aren't flowerings in the garden.
Letís favour an averagely drained, soft and rich growing substratum.
